Tip vortices flow at speed from all four three-blade Hamilton Standard propellers, as the crew onboard Boeing B-17G ‘Sally B’ of B17 Preservation Ltd sets takeoff power and begins the takeoff roll on Runway 26, at a damp and humid Jersey Airport – departing to display nearby at the 2021 Jersey International Air Display during a brief summer shower.

The last airworthy Boeing B-17 in Europe, ‘Sally B’ flies as a living memorial to USAAF operations in Europe, and not least to the 79,000 Allied personnel who lost their lives in the Second World War.
Built in 1944, the aircraft saw military service as a trainer, going on to become a research platform, and also with French authorities as a survey aircraft in a post-war career – before arriving in the UK in 1974 to become a ‘flying memorial’ – an important educational and historically significant role which continues to this day.
